£7,500 Government Grant Explained: What Does It Really Mean?

You’ve likely heard claims like, “Get a heat pump for as little as XYZ!” and thought, “What’s the catch?” Well, it’s not always that straight forward — and that’s why Busy Energy does things differently. 🌱

When others advertise a heat pump for a ‘from cost’, it’s often based on the most straightforward cases: typically these can be more modern or smaller homes, that don’t require significant additional upgrades. These properties can already meet the majority of the criteria—no need for several new radiators, or major pipework, or electrical upgrades. The installer simply fits the heat pump, unvented cylinder, and associated components, maybe with a couple of additional radiators and completes.

But for many properties, it’s not that simple. If your home is older, less energy-efficient, or in need of upgrades, you might not qualify for that face value deal. That doesn’t mean you’re out of options—it just means you need a provider who can fully tailor a flexible solution to your unique needs without borders.

At Busy Energy, we take pride in being educators, not just installers. We’re MCS, RECC, and Trustmark registered system designers and installers, and we guide you through the entire process. We evaluate your home, discuss what you actually need, and create a bespoke heating and hot water design that works for you.

🔍 Here’s the Breakdown for an average system based on our numbers, with numerous upgrades included, none being in effect able to join straight onto an existing system untouched.

💰 Average heat pump installation: £12,500 (no VAT)

💸 BUS Grant covers: £7,500

👛 Customer contribution: Around £5,500 (no VAT), including multiple upgrades like radiators, pipework, and electrical work

If your property is already energy-efficient and fits the criteria, YES it could cost as little as a few hundred pounds, along with the BUS Grant of £7500.00.

But for most older homes, it’s not always the case, some work is required to make it heat-pump-ready—and we’ll guide you through those steps.

We also want to highlight an incredibly useful resource: the government’s Help to Heat schemes, which include funding opportunities to make homes warmer and more energy-efficient. The government is investing £12 billion in these schemes, and you can learn more about them on their official webpage: Find energy grants for your home (Help to Heat).

These schemes include*

🔹 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

🔹 HUG

🔹 Sustainable Warmth Competition

🔹 Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund

🔹 Energy Company Obligation

🔹 Great British Insulation Scheme

*Please check at as not all schemes maybe operational at time of publication

At Busy Energy, we’re here to help you navigate these grants and ensure you get the support you’re eligible for. Whether it’s a heat pump, a controls upgrade, or even better advice, we’re by your side every step of the way.

If you’ve been told “no” by others or feel confused by the jargon, let’s chat. You might have more options than you think. 🏡
